Sprint - 500 meter swim, 12.4 mile bike, and 3.1 mile run
Olympic - 1500 meter swim, 24.8 mile bike, and 6.2 mile run
The scenic course will commence at City Beach for the swim and the bike course guides athletes out and back along South Shore Drive through the prairie and windmills south of Clear Lake. The race is capped off with a run on North Shore drive with a lakeside finish in City Park downtown Clear Lake.
About The Triathlon
The Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce will be hosting the 7th Annual TRI Clear Lake Triathlon sanctioned by USA Triathlon on May 27th, 2023. The scenic course will commence at City Beach; the flat and fast 1 or 2-loop bike course guides athletes out and back along South Shore Drive through the prairie and windmills south of Clear Lake. The race is capped off with a 3.1 or 6.2 mile run on North Shore drive along beautiful Clear Lake passing by the Lady of the Lake and the legendary Surf Ballroom.
New in 2023 TRI Clear Lake Triathlon was selected for the USA Triathlon State Championship race for Iowa!!
State championships will qualify the top 35% or top five (5) finishers in an age group (whichever is greater). You may only qualify for Olympic-distance Nationals by placing in the Olympic distance State Championship race or Sprint Nationals by placing in the sprint distance State Championship race.
High School State Championships Exemption: All high school athletes who finish any of the State High School Championships will automatically qualify for Sprint-distance (pending they are at least age 15 as of December 31, 2023.)
Any state championship that occurs after June 1, 2023 will qualify for BOTH 2023 AND 2024 USA Triathlon Nationals. The qualification criteria for 2024 Age Group Nationals is subject to change from what it is for 2023. Review the full 2023 qualification criteria for age group races at USA Triathlon Nationals.
Athletes do not have to be a resident of a state to win that state's championship. Any age group athlete competing in an age group division is eligible to win any state championship.
Youth Splash and Dash Course
The kids swim start and exit will be at City Beach. 7-10 year old’s will swim 100 meters and 11-15 year old’s will swim out a little deeper and complete a 200 meter swim exiting in the same location as the younger kids. Both courses will have numerous lifeguards in the water and safety personnel on site ensuring a safe and fun swim.
As the swimmers exit, they will enter the transition area where they can change into their running shoes and hit the road. The 7-10 year old’s will complete a 1k lap around City Park, kids 11-15 will complete a 2k run down North Lakeview Drive, turn around, come back to 1st Ave. N., continue East and run around the top portion of City Park to finish line. Volunteers will be on site to ensure runners are going the correct direction. There will be one aid station as the runners exit transition with water and sports drink. All athletes will receive a finisher medal & a TRI Clear Hat at the finish line! Finish line refreshments will also be provided.
Youth Splash and Dash Packet Pickup and Transition Information
Kids can pick up their race packet containing a shirt and swim cap at the Lakeview Room in City Park. Body marking will done when the kids receive their packet. The transition area will be divided into two sections, one half for kids 7-10 and one half for kids 11-15. Kids will be free to choose their own spot. Packet pick-up will begin at 3 p.m. on Friday, May 26.

5:30 p.m. Transition opens (Transition will be divided into two areas, Juniors and Seniors. Transition spots will be first come first serve)
6:15 p.m. Pre-race briefing at start location on City Beach
6:30 p.m. Senior division (11-15) starts (Athletes will line up and enter the water in pairs every 3 seconds)
6:40 p.m. Junior division (7-10) starts (This time is an approximation based on numbers. Athletes will enter the water in pairs every 3 seconds)
