Dawn 'til Dusk
Nestled in the heart of Clear Lake, Central Gardens is North Iowa's only public garden. The gardens were developed more than a decade ago by securing 2.75 acres of land which was the former site of Central Elementary School. The 2.5 acre garden site is actually many gardens within one. Gardens range from Victorian to Wetland, Butterfly, Ornamental, Grass an Shade. Water features and a stream are part of the landscape, as well as terraces and a pavilion.
Stunning architectural features, including the Moon Gate and Theatre Steps, Nature Education Pavilion and two central lawns, the Ceremonial Lawn and Activity Lawn, provide attractive locations for cultural, social and educational events. The newly completed Nature Education Pavilion with wrap around deck and floor to ceiling windows provides an unparalleled gathering/meeting room complete with bathroom and kitchenette. The Reunion Terrace and Naturalist Terrace also provide gathering places for individuals and groups.
Several areas within the Garden may be reserved for weddings, corporate picnics, club meetings or family reunions.
Guided one-hour tours by volunteer docents are available to groups of 10 persons or more wishing to book tours. Cost: $1 per person payable in advance.
Tours must be scheduled in advance so as not to conflict with other events in the garden.
Optional self-guided tours are available at no cost. Groups not wanting a docent may tour the site on their own. Handouts are available near the Garden site entrance.
Central Gardens also provides educational activities throughout the year.
