Understanding your choices means knowing your current situation. This program guides you through finding and collecting that information. It will take time, but it will be time well spent. + Don’t wait until there is a crisis to plan for long-term care. + Plan ahead while the care receiver still has the capacity to sign legal documents. + Involve all members of the family so that the care receiver’s wishes are clearly understood. + As the baby boomers age, the proportion of family caregivers to professional caregivers will increase. + What funds will be available to pay for care? Many people have an unrealistic idea of the cost of care and how Medicaid works. +Develop contingency plans depending on the progression of care needs and also for respite care. +If it is necessary for the caregiver to leave work or reduce hours, plans need to be in place to protect the caregiver’s retirement.
